Lung & Chest Cancer

Lung & Chest Cancer Treatment at Epic Care Cyberknife

The leading cause of cancer-related death in the United States is lung cancer. Our East Bay cancer center faces the reality of cancer diagnoses every day and understands the difficulty of our patients’ journey. Because of this we firmly believe that our radiation oncology team is fully equipped to assist our patients both medically and emotionally. At Epic Care Cyberknife, we are peoud to staff a team of expert oncologists who are skilled at lung and chest cancer treatment as well as lung and cancer surgery. Through our patented Cyberknife treatment, we are positive that our patients have a great chance of beating cancer, entering remission, and going on living a full and healthy life with their loved ones.

The lung is a large wet sack located just beneath the chest. Its primary function is to deliver oxygenized blood to organs throughout your body. This delicate organ is protected by the ribcage, but is also near many vital organs (including the heart), which is one of the reasons that makes this type of cancer is so dangerous.

Lung and chest cancer are typically formed by two major types of cancer cells: non-small lung cancer and small cell lung cancer. Although these cancer cells can appear due to a variety of reasons, the most common are found to have been smoking, secondhand smoke, family history, or exposure to environmental factors such as chemicals. These different types of cancerous cells will determine whether the cancer attacks the lining of the lungs, forms as a tumor or tumors within the organ, or is able to metastasize and spread to neighboring organs.

Surgery is by far and away the most commonly recognized method to get rid of cancer. Although chemotherapy and radiation are also recognized by most people, these methods are often considered as either a pre-cursor to surgery or a post-operative treatment that is used to either lessen the size of the cancer or to completely eliminate it from the body. In this day and age though, Cyberknife’s hypofractionated high-dose radiosurgery is being more widely recognized and accepted as a ground-breaking treatment modality. When compared to conventional radiotherapy, our compelling scientific evidence and data have shown significant improvement in both tumor control and patient survival.

Consider the functions of a lung. Because it is pumping blood and oxygen throughout the body consistently throughout the day, it is always in motion—expanding and retracting over and over again. Given this fact, it can become hard to operate on or target cancerous cells with standard radiation. Not at Epic Case Cyberknife! With our cutting-edge technology, we can safely deliver lung radiosurgery with the CyberKnife® Robotic Radiosurgery system. This system not only takes the constant movement of the lungs into consideration, but consistently sets new standards for accuracy and conformality.

Most patients who do not use the Cyberknife treatment method will default to using other, more commonly accepted (but not necessarily the best choice) forms of treatment such as lung surgery. Our patients who choose a Cyberknife treatment, choose a non-invasive, non-surgical cancer treatment alternative that is just as, if not more, effective.

What to Expect As A Lung & Chest Cancer Patient

Once our patients have decided that Epic Care Cyberknife is the best place to receive their cancer treatments, our lung and chest cancer patients should expect the following.

Consultation: A consultation is a must when you sign on to be a patient at our facility. This is important because a member of our team of oncologists will be able to determine the best cancer treatment plan that is uniquely suited for our patient. In most cases, Cyberknife will be selected as the best course of action for patients who suffer from lung and chest cancer.

Pre-Treatment: It has been found that most patients can be treated without the need for external frames or implanted fiducials. The CyberKnife system uses a sophisticated image processing and registration system, wherein tumors can be tracked non-invasively. This not only eliminates the needless risks associated with fiducial implantation, it also expedites the delivery of treatment.

Imaging & Dose Planning: By using the Cyberknife’s advanced robotic technology, our doctors are able to utilize continual image guidance which automatically tracks, detects, and corrects for target movements throughout the treatment. By combining Synchrony Respiratory Tracking and our 4D treatment planning capabilities, we can carefully target the cancerous cells with minimal marginal error, ensuring that the doses of radiation are significantly reduced to only the targeted areas while minimizing healthy tissue damage.

Treatment: Once treatment begins, depending on the size of the tumor, its location, and its shape, our patients can expect to come into Epic Care Cyberknife for as little as one to as many as five sessions over the course of one to two weeks. We assure you that the treatment is non-invasive, does not require any anesthesia, has no post-treatment downtime, and will be performed with the patient laying down on our Cyberknife treatment table where natural breathing occurs during the entire procedure.
